What Will We Do With Goo by Haley Faulkner (illustrated by Kevin Faulkner) is a delightful and imaginative picture book that captures the playful chaos of childhood, the love within a family, and the irresistible charm of a mischievous pet. At the heart of the story is a young child, their two moms, and Goo—a dog who is equal parts troublemaker and sweetheart. I am particularly fond of this book also, because the author is my daughter and the illustrator is my son. So proud of them for this accomplishment. Goo is a nickname we use for our actual family dog Goose.

Goo’s personality truly drives the book. He’s mischievous in the way only a beloved dog can be—getting into things he shouldn’t, stirring up a bit of chaos, and keeping everyone on their toes—but he’s also undeniably adorable. That balance makes him instantly endearing. Young readers will likely recognize the kind of playful trouble Goo brings, whether they have a pet of their own or simply enjoy stories filled with energy and humor.

The story unfolds through a series of wondering moments, centered around what Goo might do next. Instead of following a strict, structured plot, the book leans into curiosity and imagination. This makes it especially engaging during read-aloud time, as children are naturally invited to guess, laugh, and come up with their own ideas about Goo’s next adventure. It turns the reading experience into something interactive and fun rather than purely passive.

Another meaningful aspect of the book is its gentle and natural representation of family. The main character has two moms, and their presence adds warmth and authenticity to the story without ever feeling forced. It simply shows a loving, supportive home, allowing children to see that families come in many forms—all equally full of care and connection.

The tone throughout is light, cheerful, and full of heart. Even when Goo is causing a bit of mischief, there’s always an underlying sense of affection and humor. The illustrations help bring this to life, capturing Goo’s playful antics and the cozy family dynamic in a way that feels inviting and easy for young readers to connect with.

Though the book is short, it leaves a lasting impression thanks to its open-ended style and lovable characters. It’s particularly well-suited for younger children who enjoy animals, silly scenarios, and stories that encourage them to think and imagine.

it’s a joyful and engaging read that reminds us how even a little bit of mischief—especially from an adorable dog—can fill a home with laughter, love, and memorable moments.
